What is R-404A?

R-404A is a refrigerant blend made from R-125, R-143a, and R-134a. It is commonly used in medium and low-temperature refrigeration systems such as supermarket freezers, cold storage rooms, and transport refrigeration. Customers choose R-404A for its strong cooling performance and dependable operation compared with older options like R-22.

Systems built for R-404A typically use POE (polyolester) lubricants to maintain compatibility and efficiency. Some older refrigeration setups can be converted to R-404A with the right adjustments, and professional guidance is recommended to ensure reliable results.

R-404A is classified as non-toxic and non-flammable under the A1 safety rating. As the market moves toward lower-GWP choices, many new installations consider alternatives, but R-404A remains widely available for existing equipment that still relies on it.

Key Properties of R-404A

Low Boiling Point

R-404A boils at around -51.8°F (1 atm), making it highly effective for deep cooling in freezers and transport refrigeration.

High Operating Pressure

Works at higher pressures compared to R-22, which means systems need parts designed for R-404A performance.

Better Energy Output

Provides steady cooling power and efficiency, helping systems maintain low temperatures without extra strain.

No Ozone Impact

With an ODP (Ozone Depletion Potential) of 0, R-404A does not harm the ozone layer.

High Global Warming Potential

Has a GWP of 3920—important to consider as many industries are shifting toward lower-GWP refrigerants.

Safe Use

Classified as non-toxic and non-flammable (A1 rating), giving users confidence in safe operation.
