What is R-22?

R22 refrigerant, also called hcfc 22 or Freon, is one of the most widely used cooling gases in older residential and commercial air-conditioning systems. For decades, it was the standard choice thanks to reliable cooling performance and broad equipment compatibility.

Although new systems no longer use R22 due to environmental regulations, many existing units in the U.S. still depend on it. If your AC or refrigeration setup requires R22, our 30lb EPA-certified cylinders provide the supply you need to keep it running smoothly.

Key Properties of R-22

Low Boiling Point

R22 refrigerant boils at about −41.8°F, making it effective for medium to low-temperature cooling applications.

Higher Pressure Operation

Runs at higher pressures compared to older refrigerants like R-12, which requires compatible system parts.

Improved Energy Efficiency

Offers stronger cooling efficiency than many legacy refrigerants, helping systems perform more reliably.

Non-Zero Ozone Depletion

With an ODP value of around 0.055, R22 has an environmental impact that led to its phase-out in new equipment.

Global Warming Potential

R22 carries a GWP of about 1810—still significant, though lower than some alternatives once widely used.

Non-Flammable

Classified as ASHRAE A1, meaning non-flammable and low toxicity when handled properly.
